The second screen in the case is for the first smartphone from the South Koreans that supports super-fast 5G data transmission: the V50 ThinQ 5G model. LG advertises as an advantage that the two displays can operate independently of each other. For example, you can watch a film and at the same time look up something on the Internet on the other screen. The control buttons for a video game could also be shown on the second display.

Samsung wants to compete with Google and Apple with their own paid offer. The South Koreans are working with a Berlin start-up for Samsung Pay.

Samsung is entering the booming business with contactless payment in Germany. The South Korean technology group announced on Thursday that the mobile pay app Samsung Pay will be available from October 28. Almost every bank account can be linked to the new payment service. For larger sums, installment payments are possible for Samsung cell phone owners.

Samsung Electronics, which is currently fighting for the crown on the smartphone market with the Chinese Huawei group, is not cooperating with several banks in this offer, unlike Apple or Google, but rather processes all payments via Solarisbank’s virtual Visa debit cards. Both Visa and Samsung are involved in the Berlin start-up.

The amounts are debited from the customer’s bank accounts by Solarisbank. The new service can be linked to almost any German bank account, said Samsung manager Thorsten Böker. A new and simple customer identification process is used for the link, which does not require video identification or a visit to the branch, it said.

Samsung Pay also allows installment payments

Samsung and Solarisbank also run an installment payment service called Samsung Pay "Splitpay" a. For payment amounts of 100 euros or more, customers could have these financed in installments with terms between three and 24 months, said Krishna Chandran, Managing Director Lending at Solarisbank AG.

Samsung is comparatively late with its offer. Both Apple and Google have long had their own mobile payment services in their portfolio. However, Samsung mainly competes against Google Pay because the US company’s payment service is also available on Samsung smartphones.

Mobile payment is not yet widely used

In Germany, according to an Innofact survey from last summer on mobile payments on behalf of Verivox, four out of ten respondents (39 percent) have already paid with their smartphone. For the vast majority of consumers, however, the smartphone is not their everyday means of payment.

Only 13 percent of those surveyed would pay for a 20 euro purchase in the supermarket with their smartphone (Apple Pay, Google Pay, retailer apps). 41 percent said they paid with debit cards, 36 percent cash with bills and coins and 9 percent with credit cards.

Samsung is expanding its Galaxy 20 series with a new model: the Galaxy S20 FE and the Galaxy S20 FE 5G. The special thing about the devices: It should be based on the wishes of the Galaxy community. Samsung writes in a press release.

"The new premium flagship smartphone is based on feedback from the Galaxy community and therefore comes with selected, powerful features that fans really appreciate"writes Samsung. What can the device do?

Galaxy S20 and S20 FE: what are the differences?

Compared to the Galaxy S20, the S20 FE with 6.5 inches has a slightly larger Super AMOLED screen. It has an FHD + resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. This guarantees smoother images and is still rarely found on smartphones. However, the S20 FE has a lower resolution than the S20. The battery is somewhat larger at 4,500 mAh and should be sufficient for a day and a little more with normal use.

The main memory is either 6 gigabytes (GB) or 8 GB, the internal memory either 128 GB or 256 GB. The 5G model, on the other hand, only has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. However, this can be expanded by up to 1 terabyte with both variants using a microSD card. As with its S20 models, Samsung has installed the Exynos 990 as the processor for the LTE model. The 5G variant has received the slightly faster Snapdragon 865.

Users of the new Galaxy S20 FE can take photos with a triple camera: Here the sensors have a resolution of 12 megapixels (wide angle), 12 MP (ultra wide angle) and 8MP (telephoto). The Galaxy S20 also has a triple camera, but the telephoto lens has a resolution of 64 MP. This should guarantee a particularly strong zoom. A test of the Galaxy S20 Ultra can be found here. The front camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels in the FE model. The Galaxy S20 has 10 MP.

Prices and availability

The variant with 128 GB memory will cost 633 euros, the one with 256 GB memory 719 euros. The price for the Galaxy S20 FE 5G is 730 euros. This means that the FE models are significantly cheaper than the devices in the Galaxy S20 series at market launch: They were available from around 900 euros at the time.

However, according to price comparison portals on Ebay, the Galaxy S20 is available from 580 euros. The Galaxy S20 5G can be found on the online marketplace for 650 euros.

With the Galaxy Fold, Samsung wanted to revolutionize the smartphone market, but the device had a few shortcomings. Now the company is delivering a second version of the foldable cell phone. What is it good for?

Bend once and it becomes a mini tablet. Close it and it turns into a smartphone: Samsung presents the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G, the successor to its first foldable mobile phone. The first version suffered from some technical flaws and the high price. The short test shows: Samsung has done a lot better with the new Fold.

Everything works much better

The Z Fold 2 5G is still clunky in closed mode and lies like a brick in the hand. But the display now has a (almost borderless) size of 6.2 inches and is thus similar to a standard smartphone. The predecessor was still 4.6 inches – one of the biggest criticisms of the device. Only the 25: 9 format is unusual, which is particularly noticeable in everyday life when reading text and watching videos.

However, users should rather do this in the open state anyway. Because then the Z Fold 2 turns into a mini tablet. And with a screen diagonal of 7.6 inches, it is even slightly larger than its predecessor and now has a screen refresh rate of 120 Hertz (at the front it is 60 Hertz). The new fold can now also be opened steplessly. The predecessor only knew the state "on" or "to"even if it could be set up with difficulty, slightly bent.

Otherwise, the device offers the same functions as its predecessor: users can open up to three apps at the same time and distribute them across the screen. Some apps are transferred to the respective display when they are closed or opened. And when it is half-folded, the Z Fold 2 5G can be used in apps such as "Notes" or use the calculator like a kind of PDA. The input on a touchpad does not come close to the haptic feedback on a real keyboard. The fold in the middle of the screen can also be seen on the Z Fold 2 under appropriate lighting conditions. But as with the predecessor, this is quickly forgotten during use.

This is in the Galaxy Z Fold 2

In terms of hardware, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G is up to date: As the name suggests, the device is equipped for the new 5G cellular standard. A Snapdragon 865+ together with 12 gigabytes (GB) of RAM guarantees a smooth smartphone experience. With 256 GB of internal storage, there is enough space for personal data. However, as with many other Samsung devices, this cannot be expanded using a microSD card.

The battery has a standard size of 4,500 mAh. However, the Z Fold 2 can consume more in unfolded mode than users of other smartphones are used to. This time the device has five cameras instead of six: Samsung has dispensed with the second lens on the large screen. The selfie cameras are now built into a hole instead of protruding noticeably like the predecessor. This is not the only reason why the Z Fold 2 looks more elegant and high quality overall.

The two selfie cameras on the small and large screen have a resolution of 10 megapixels each, the three main cameras with 12 MP. That delivers good results, but Samsung has even equipped its flagships like the Galaxy S20 Ultra with a 108-megapixel camera. However, the Z Fold 2 has one advantage that other devices do not have: users can take pictures with the main camera when it is opened and view themselves on the outside of the screen.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G is heavy and bulky – but thanks to its foldability it is also an eye-catcher. The biggest shortcoming of the first version – the small front display – has been fixed. The high price of almost 2,000 euros is also a flaw on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G. This should deter many users from buying: Even with a current Galaxy S smartphone and a tablet, customers get away cheaper. But if you don’t mind the price and you just want a special smartphone, you should definitely take a look at the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
